Eminem biography

Eminem-His Own Life
Marshall Bruce Mathers III (born October 17, 1972), better known by his stage name Eminem or Slim Shady is an Academy and Grammy Award-winning and honorary hip hop artist, record producer and occasional actor.
He was born in St. Joseph, Missouri, though he was raised in Detroit, Michigan, around the East 8 Mile Road & Schoenherr intersection, the same neighborhood where he met his best friend Proof. He got his big break when his rapping ability was discovered by pioneer rapper and producer Dr. Dre. He signed him to his Aftermath Entertainment label, becoming a crossover sensation with his debut single “My Name Is”.

Eminem has been described as “the Bix Beiderbecke of rap”.[1] He is noted for his ability to change his vocal pace and style multiple times within one song without losing the beat. [citation needed] Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney has praised Mathers for his “verbal energy” and for arousing popular interest in poetry and lyrics.[2] Mathers is also infamous for the controversy surrounding many of his lyrics. With the enormous success of his highly acclaimed album The Marshall Mathers LP and its subsequent nomination for four Grammy awards including Album of the Year, critics such as GLAAD denounced his lyrics as homophobic and misogynist, while others protested that it promoted violence.

Mathers has stated that he is taking a break from solo work, but contis to produce and collaborate with fellow Aftermath artists, as well as rappers under his Shady Records label. Elton John has praised Eminem on many occasions claiming he is amongst legendary music stars such as Mick Jagger and Jimi Hendrix.[3]Eminem is known to be the best selling music artist of the 21st century so far by MTV.[1]

In 2003 Eminem was named the second most powerful celebrity on the planet.[4] On December 5, 2006, Shady Records released Eminem Presents The Re-Up, an album compiled in mix-tape format that features the Shady Records artist. Eminem has plans to release a album around December 2007.

Biography

Early life
By most accounts, the Mathers family was poor. They moved constantly, during which Marshall and his mother often lived in public housing, mobile homes, and under the care of relatives. From time to time they also lived in their car, and in fact this is where Eminem’s younger brother, Nathan Samra-Mathers, was born. During this time, Debbie Mathers was taking the prescription medications Vicodin and Diazepam|Valium; Marshall Mathers later claimed in numerous interviews and songs that his mother was abusing the s, to which she retaliated with a lawsuit pressing defamation charges. In the song “Cleaning Out My Closet”, Mathers also accuses his mother of having a variety of Munchausen Syndrome, Munchausen’s By Proxy, “my whole life I was made to believe I was when I wasn’t”. This was not the first time someone had suggested she had the disorder; a social worker had made similar comments in 1996. Marshall’s uncle Ronald “Ronnie” Polkingharn, who was born three months before him on July 27th,1972, introduced Mathers to hip-hop and the two were best friends. On December 14, 1991, 19-year-old Polkingharn committed suicide. This event, Mathers has said, devastated him and his entire extended family. Ronnie Nelson’s older brother Steven suffered a stroke as a result of the stress. Mathers was so distraught he abandoned his musical career for a year. References to Ronnie’s death appear in several songs, including “Stan”, “Cleaning Out My Closet”, “Mockingbird”, “How Come”, (by D12) and “My Dad’s Gone Crazy”. Mathers has a tattoo on his upper left arm that says “Ronnie R.I.P.”

Before dropping out of Lincoln High School in Warren at the age of 17 after failing ninth grade three times, Mathers made a number of significant acquaintances at the school, including Evan Perks, a three-time chess champion who was shot in a drive by, the late rapper, who was to become one of his closest friends, a local emcee Brandon Dalley (Eastwood) whom Eminem claims he derived most of his raw style from, and future wife Kimberly Ann ‘Kim Scott’, with whom he soon developed a long-term relationship. When she became nt, Mathers started working on getting a record deal to support his new family; he discusses this in “Never 2 Far”, saying “I got a baby on the way, I don’t even got a car … I still stay with my moms … We gotta make some hit records or something because I’m tired of being broke”. When the Infinite album failed to generate the reve and acclaim he had hoped for, she ended their relationship, preventing him from seeing his newborn child, a daughter named Hailie Jade Scott who was born December 25th, 1995; distraught, he attempted suicide with an overdose of Tylenol. After the attempt failed, he resumed his efforts to succeed in the music industry and reconcile with Kim. He ultimately succeeded in doing both, marrying her on June 14th, 1999, in Saint Joseph, Missouri.

Mathers would go on to mention his daughter extensively in some of his songs, including “97 Bonnie & Clyde”, “The Real Slim Shady”, and 1999, which takes the form of a one-sided dialogues with Hailie, as well as “Mockingbird”, “Encore” and “When I’m Gone”, all of which are proclamations of his love and dedication to her. In addition, Haliie sings with him in the song, “My Dad’s Gone Crazy”. “Hailie’s Song” involves a sample of Hailie’s laugh in the second verse.

Tattoo of his daughter Hailie on his right arm

This image has an uncertain copyright status and is pending deletion. You can comment on the removal.Eminem wrote “Hailie’s Song” so he could keep it in the vault for Hailie to hear when she gets older. That changed when he ended up playing it for Hailie and she really liked it. Hailie joined her father personally in the hook for “My Dad’s Gone Crazy” on the album The Eminem Show.

Eminem has two tattoos dedicated to Hailie. One is on his upper right arm which is a portrait of her. The other one is on his lower right arm that says Hailie Jade.

Eminem has repeatedly stated she is the most important person in his life. The “Mockingbird” music video appears to feature home movies of Halie Jade and her cousin, Alaina (referred to as Lainy in the song). The more recent videos have the faces of the girls edited out. Alaina has recently been adopted by Eminem and is now legally Hailie Jade’s sister. Hailie also has a half sister named Whitney, whom her mother Kim Mathers conceived after her first divorce from Eminem.

Early career

The cover of Eminem’s first album Infinite (album)Interested in rap from a young age, Eminem began performing as early as 13, later gaining some popularity with the group Soul Intent in 1995 and released a two track album under the same name. In 1996, he released an independent underground album named ‘Infinite’.The album received no airplay and a mixed critical response, with people claiming Eminem’s rapping style sounded too similar to Nas and A-Z. It was after this that s, drama and negativity in his life.Mathers followed ‘Infinite’ with ‘The Slim Shady’ demo, which saw his lyrics take a decidedly darker turn, in songs like “No One’s Iller” and “Murder Murder”, the latter in which he talks about having to commit crimes to feed his daughter. He became famous in the hip-hop underground because of his distinctive, cartoon-ish style and the fact that he was white in a predominantly black genre. Fellow rapper Snoop Dogg refers to him as rap’s “great white American hope” in the song ” Please 2″ on Eminem’s ‘Marshall Mathers’.

Eminem had done a notable amount of work with fellow Detroit MC “Royce da 5′9″ early in his career. They referred to themselves as Bad Meets Evil, with Eminem playing the evil and Royce playing the bad in the song of the same name on ‘The Slim Shady’”. Royce da 5′9″ and Eminem were considered to be two of the best underground MC’s in Detroit and were both respected for their battling skills. The Jay-Z song “Renagade” uses Eminem’s verses from a song originally done with Royce called “Renegade”. The song’s first verse ends with the words, “Royce, he’s the king of Detroit…” which was replaced with Eminem making beat box noises sounding like “He’s Jigga Jigga Jigga” (nickname for Jay-Z) for Jay-Z’s “Renagade”. Eminem makes a reference to Jay-Z using his verses in a song when he claims “Go bring Jay-z, tell him I’m a ghost-write for him on Dre’s next CD ” from “Stir Crazy” that he recorded with ‘The Madd Rapper’.

While the two were great friends and had mutual respect for one another both personally and musically, they eventually had a falling out. Royce later had an altercation with D12 and made numerous songs defaming and disrespecting the group; however, very few lines were aimed at Eminem himself, none of which were direct attacks. The relationship between the two is unknown at the moment but no talks of a collaboration have surfaced. Recent rumors suggest that the argument was subdued prior to Proof’s death.

Success

Album cover for The Slim Shady LPAt Aftermath/Interscope, Mathers released The Slim Shady LP, which went on to be one of the most popular albums of 1999[citation needed], going triple platinum by the end of the year. With the album’s popularity came controversy surrounding many of the album’s lyrics. In “‘97 Bonnie and Clyde”, he describes a trip with his infant daughter, disposing of the body of his wife. Another song, “Guilty Conscience,” ends with him encouraging a man to murder his wife and her lover. “Guilty Conscience” also marked the beginning of the powerful friendship and musical bond that Dr. Dre and Eminem would share. The two label-mates would later collaborate on a line of hit songs, including “Forgot About Dre” and “What’s The Difference” from Dr. Dre’s highly acclaimed[citation needed] album 2001.

Album cover of The Marshall Mathers LP (2000)The Marshall Mathers LP was released in May 2000, quickly selling two million copies. It was the fastest selling rap album of all time [2]. The first single released from the album, the hit: The Real Slim Shady, was a huge hit, thanks in part to the catchy rhythm and chorus line, “Will the real Slim Shady please stand up?” (adapted from the catch phrase of the TV quiz show To Tell the Truth). It also created some buzz by insulting celebrities and making dubious claims about them; he implies, among other things, that Christina Aguilera performed on Fred Durst (of Limp Bizkit) and Carson Daly (of MTV’s Total Request Live). “The Real Slim Shady” is widely considered to be Eminem’s “signature” and best commercial single.[citation needed] In his second single, “The Way I Am,” he reveals to his fans the pressures from his record company to top “My Name Is” and sell more records, and dismisses the alleged controversial link between music such as that of Marilyn Manson and shootings such as Columbine High School as absurd, instead blaming the parents. In the third single, “Stan” (which samples ’s “Thank You”), Eminem attempts to deal with his new-found fame, taking on the perspective of a deranged fan who kills himself and his nt girlfriend, mirroring “‘97 Bonnie & Clyde” on The Slim Shady LP. To this date, “The Marshall Mathers LP” is widely considered to be Eminem’s greatest achievement, and a hip-hop classic.

Album cover for The Eminem ShowMathers’ third major album, The Eminem Show, was released in summer 2002 and proved to be another smash hit for the rapper shooting to number one on the charts and selling well over 1 million copies in its first week of release. It featured the single “Without Me,” an apparent sequel to “The Real Slim Shady”, in which he makes derogatory comments about boy bands, Limp Bizkit, Moby, and Lynne Cheney, among others. The album reflected on the impact of his rise to fame, his relationship with his wife and daughter, and his status in the hip-hop community. He also addresses the charges he faced over assaulting a bouncer he saw ing his wife in 2000. While there is clear anger present on several tracks, this album was considerably less inflammatory than the previous, and as such did not face any protests of misogyny and homophobia that had plagued The Marshall Mathers LP.

2004 saw the release of Mathers’ fourth major album, Encore. The album was another chart-topper for the rapper, driven by the formulaic single “Just Lose It”, notable for its laming of Michael on. Dee the comedic theme of the lead single, Encore also had its fair share of serious subject matter, including the poignant anti-war track “Mosh”. By the end of 2005 Mathers was back with a new single, “When I’m Gone”, recorded for the greatest-hits set Curtain Call: The Hits.

use

Album cover for EncoreMathers was no stranger to s and , as suggested by a large number of his songs, including the acclaimed[citation needed] ” Ballad”, “These s” (with D12) and “Under the Influence.” The song “I’m Shady” (The Slim Shady LP, 1999) includes the explanatory line “well, I do take pills ( or prescription s), don’t do speed / don’t do k, don’t do coke / I do e weed / don’t do smack / I do do ’shrooms, do / I just wanna make a few things clear.” Other tracks, such as “Just Don’t Give a ,”[5] do suggest use, although he has faced legal trouble involving s. However, with the sentence of two years of probation taking effect in 2001, during which he was subject to mandatory regular testing, his recreational use was put to an end. This fact is supported with references to his use in his music, which all but disappeared after 2001, and comments by late band-mate Proof, who states that Mathers “sobered up”.[6] However, with rising pressures and workload in his professional career, he found it difficult to get the rest he wanted, and turned to Zolpidem sleeping pills for relief. In summer 2005, Mathers embarked on his first US concert run in three years, the Anger Management 3 Tour, featuring Lil’ Jon, 50 Cent and G-Unit, D12, Obie Trice, The Alchemist, and others. In August 2005, Mathers canceled the European leg of the tour and subsequently announced that he had entered rehabilitation for treatment for a “dependency on sleep medication.”[7]

Remarriage and second divorce
Mathers remarried Kim on January 14, 2006 in Michigan. His best man was longtime friend and D12 member Proof(who was shot dead in a Detroit night club three months later), while Kim’s maid of honor was their daughter Hailie. They walked down the aisle to Mathers’ song “Mockingbird.” Guests at the wedding included the other members of D12, as well as the members of G-Unit. Kim’s mother attended the wedding, while Mathers’ mother did not. However, less than 11 weeks after remarrying Kim, filed for divorce at the Macomb County office.[8], citing “a breakdown in the marriage relationship” (which, in Michigan, is the only reason one can give for cause of divorce). On April 5, 2006, the news was leaked to the Detroit Free Press and MTV’s Total Request Live. In addition, Mathers was romantically linked with “The best selling artist of the 1990’s” Mariah Carey. She denies they ever officially dated. Mathers states that they dated for 6 or 7 months and “she was too diva, I am a normal person.” This might have hurt Eminem’s ego, because he called Mariah out in the song Jimmy k Corn, from Eminem Presents: The Re-Up. in 2007 after a test eminem was found to have a large amount of in his system.

Recent events

Album cover for Curtain Call: The Hits.In 2005, some industry insiders speculated that Mathers was considering ending his rapping career after six years and several multi-platinum albums. Speculation began in early 2005 about a double-disc album to be released late that year, rumored to be titled The Funeral.[citation needed] The album manifested itself under the name Curtain Call: The Hits, and was released on December 6, 2005 under Aftermath Entertainment.

In July 2005, the Detroit Free Press broke news of a potential final bow for Mathers as a solo performer, quoting members of his inside circle who said that he will begin to fully embrace the role of producer and label executive. The Free Press, Mathers’ hometown paper, wrote that the aptly titled Encore album would now stand as his final solo album. [9]

Mathers announced via MTV News that he does not plan on retiring soon, though he is planning on taking a break to produce music.[citation needed] He is still uncertain whether another album will be released, but his career has not come to a full stop. He is continuing to work out of the spotlight, including producing the Redman album Red Gone Wild.

At “Anger Management” in Madison Square Garden and Atlanta’s HiFi Buys Amphitheater, he openly announced that he is not retiring and indicates this is all just gossip by saying the moon exploding is a more credible rumor.[citation needed] However, many still speculate that he will be retiring and the announcement at Madison Square Garden was only a ploy to distract the fans.[citation needed]

Adding to the already feverish rumors from fans, Mathers released a track on Curtain Call entitled “When I’m Gone.” The lyrics feature the topic of Slim Shady’s destructive power over Marshall Mathers’ life, and talks of laying his alter ego to rest, one line featuring the lyrics “I turn around, find a gat on the ground, it/ Put it to my brain, scream ‘Die Shady!’ and pop it. * s*”

Album cover of Eminem Presents The Re-Up (2006)On December 6, 2005, the day of Curtain Call’s release, Mathers denied that he was retiring on Detroit-based WKQI’s “Mojo in the Mornin’” radio show, but implied that he would at least be taking a break as an artist, saying, “I’m at a point in my life right now where I feel like I don’t know where my career is going … This is the reason that we called it ‘Curtain Call,’ because this could be the final thing. We don’t know.” [10]

Eminem has had some activity since the release of Curtain Call. Eminem also rapped a verse in a live performance of a Rhymes’ “Touch It” remix at the 2006 BET Music Awards on June 27, 2006.

On August 15, 2006, Obie Trice released Second Round’s on Me. Eminem produced 8 tracks on the album. He was also featured in the song “There They Go”.

Eminem is featured in a new Akon single “Smack That” which appeared on Akon’s new album Konvicted. He also appears in the video with a new tattoo and a green polo. According to Akon, Eminem has canceled his retirement plans and is making a new album. He said, “Eminem told me he was getting bored with everything, which is why he took a break. But he’s back working on an album and I’ve got some records ready for him to use on it. We’ve talked about doing something together for so long, but our schedules made it impossible. It was our chemistry that got him out of retirement.”[11] On November 19, “Smack That” topped the Official UK Singles Chart and claimed Eminem his 7th UK Number One Single. In December 2006, it was nominated for “Best Rap/Sung Collaboration” at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards. Producer Swizz Beatz has also said in an interview that he has sent some new tracks to Eminem.[citation needed]

Eminem was set to appear on Tech N9ne’s 2006 album Everready: The Religion on track entitled “My World” along with Tech and Brotha Lynch Hung, but it has been said that the passing of Proof prevented Eminem from contributing his verse.[citation needed]

On December 5, 2006, Eminem released an album compilation entitled Eminem Presents The Re-Up which features artists from the Shady Records roster. The first single released was “You Don’t Know” which features 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks and new artist Cashis.

Other works and ventures

Eminem as an actor

Eminem in the 8 Mile posterMathers made his Hollywood acting debut with the semi-autobiographical 8 Mile, released in November 2002. He has said the movie is not an account of his life, but a representation of growing up in Detroit.[citation needed] He recorded several new songs for the soundtrack, including “Lose Yourself,” which won an Academy Award for Best Original Song; it was not performed at the ceremony, reportedly because ABC wanted him to perform an edited version.

Mathers has also done some voice acting, both on Crank ers and a web cartoon called The Slim Shady Show, which has since been pulled off-line and is instead sold on DVD.

Eminem will star in the upcoming film Have – Will Travel in which he will play a bounty hunter called Paladin. He will also be involved in either the soundtrack or scoring.[citation needed]

Shady Records
Dr. Dre’s leading protégé, Mathers succeeded in multi-platinum record sales. He was granted his own record label, a sub-label of Aftermath Entertainment. He and his manager Paul Rosenberg created Shady Records in late 2000. Mathers and Dr. Dre had signed 50 Cent on a venture between Aftermath & Shady Records. His own Detroit collective D12 and rapper Obie Trice were signed to the Shady Records label. In 2003, Mathers and Dr. Dre signed on Atlanta rapper Stat Quo to the Shady/Aftermath roster. DJ Green Lantern, the former deejay for Mathers, was signed to Shady Records until a dispute with 50 Cent forced him to depart from the label[citation needed]; he is no longer associated with Mathers.[citation needed] The Alchemist is now officially Mathers’ tour deejay. In 2005, Mathers officially signed another Atlanta rapper known as Bobby Creekwater to his label along with west coast rapper Ca$his.

In the Anger Management Tour of 2003 The Alchemist hurt his wrist, preventing him from being the tour’s DJ. Clinton Sparks filled in for him, and his name is mentioned on the album numerous times.

Eminem as a producer
Mathers is also active as a producer of rap records. Besides being the executive producer of D12’s two albums, Devil’s Night and D12 World, he has also executive produced Obie Trice’s Cheers and Second Round’s on Me as well as 50 Cent’s Get Rich or Die Tryin’ and The Massacre. In addition, Mathers has produced and appeared on several songs by other famous rappers, such as Jada’ “Welcome To D-Block”, Jay-Z’s “Renagade” and “Moment of Clarity” Lloyd Banks’ “Warrior Part 2″, and “Hands Up”, Tony Yayo’s “Drama Setter”, Trick Trick’s “Welcome 2 Detroit,” and Xzibit’s “My Name” and “Don’t Approach Me”. Most of The Eminem Show was produced by Mathers himself, with co-production from longtime collaborator Jeff Bass. He also split the production with Dr. Dre on Encore. In 2004, Mathers was the Executive Producer of 2Pac’s posthumous album Loyal to the Game with 2Pac’s mother Afeni Shakur. He produced the UK #1 single ” Gospel” which featured Elton John. On certain tracks on the album, 2Pac’s voice was slowed down and digitally altered to match the beat and make him say things like “2005″ and “G-Unit,” angering many fans. Mathers has named 2Pac as his favorite rapper.[citation needed] He has also produced “The Cross” off Nas’s album God’s Son.

Eminem in D12
Main article: D12
In 2001, Mathers brought his rap group, D12, to the popular music scene. In 2001, D12 released their hit debut album Devil’s Night.

The first single released off of the album was “Purple Pills” (radio named “Purple Hills”), an ode to recreational use (although this was preceded in the UK by a song called ” on You”, which was included on the special edition version of the album). The version of the song released on the radio and music television was heavily rewritten to remove many of the song’s obscene lyrics, and renamed “Purple Hills.” While the first single was a massive hit, the album’s second single, “Fight Music”, was not as successful, in part due to its timing in relation to the 9/11 attacks.

After their debut, D12 took a three-year break from the studio, later regrouping to release their sophomore album, D12 World, in 2004, which featured the popular hit single release “My Band.” The other members of D12 have also appeared as guests on all of Mathers’ albums since The Marshall Mathers LP. D12’s third album was tentatively scheduled for a 2006 release. D12 member had said that the crew had spent time in the studio. However, it can be expected that the album may be postponed due to the untimely death of D12 member Proof. The news has since been released that the album will be released June/July 2007.[citation needed]

Death of Proof
Main article: Proof (rapper)

Eminem pays tribute to Proof in “Smack That”Wikinews has news related to:
Rapper Proof (D12) shot and killed outside Detroit On April 11, 2006, Proof was murdered by a fatal shot wound to the head at approximately 4:30am EDT (08:30 UTC) at the CCC Club on 8 Mile Road in Detroit, Michigan after fatally shooting U.S. military veteran Keith Bender, Jr.

Proof was buried on April 19, 2006 in The Fellowship Chapel, Detroit to a full house of 2,000 with thousands mourning outside. Mathers and Obie Trice both read eulogies at the service.

An excerpt: “I’m sure everybody who has ever met him, even just once, can testify to the fact that he illuminated a room when he walked in it. I believe that Proof loved people and people loved him. He was a magnet. He lured you in. You wanted to learn about him, follow his swagger. Without Proof, there would be no Eminem, no Slim Shady, and no D12.”

Eminem-8 Mile

8 Mile probably isn’t what you might’ve expected. Given the cast and premise, you probably expect one of two things, either a silly excuse for self-aggrandizement or an overblown caricature of hip-hop culture. You don’t get either. What you get in 8 Mile is a brave film that is surprisingly culturally and intellectually rigorous and an aggressive film that is so emotionally intense that it seems to sometimes tear itself apart.

The plot is not a biography of Marshall Mathers, a.k.a. Eminem, but it is very much informed and guided by the experiences of his early career as a rapper in blue-collar and no-collar Detroit. Eminem gives a compelled, powerful performance that diverges just enough from his public self to inject the story with a strong sense of realism without sacrificing anything artistically. The supporting cast also makes fine use of their considerable talents, carving the Detroit of this film out of the world itself, not out of fiction. Even as they help communicate a hard, unforgiving time and place, they also give rise to deep and profound sympathies that don’t come around in every film.

The naturalistic presentation doesn’t stop there; most of the film is shot on location in Detroit, and the gritty, sometimes almost frenzied design and cinematography firmly establish that this is not just another Hollywood movie. This is a movie that goes places movies don’t generally go where, for good or for ill, many people do live every day. For one, 8 Mile might have the most believable, most powerful representation of an automobile factory of any film in the last twenty years, and it still manages to use the location for sophisticated, plot driving drama. Good stuff.

Of course, the film has its flaws. It’s very heavy and bleak, at times it skirts the boundary of cliche a little bit, and the villains, a rival rap group known as the “Free World,” are a little over the top, but, time and again, the solid acting and daunting camerawork keep coming back to seize the eye and command attention.

Oh, and, in case you were wondering, there is rapping, and plenty of it. The rapping is really top-quality, cutting edge stuff, for the most part, and it is integrated into the script so well that it is always clear that the characters choose to rap, not that the script forces them to do so. The rapping happens because it must happen to these characters at this time, not because Eminem is a rapper. In an industry where pop music movies are a dime a dozen, this is particularly impressive. This film says something about rap and the human experience that hasn’t been articulated this well many times before; it bridges the gap between rap and poetry in a big way, and makes that gap look a lot smaller.

All in all, the thing that really defines 8 Mile is how committed to this idea the cast and crew must have been in order to make this film. Every minute and every second, the cast’s intensity never gives up, and the camera never sleeps. The film is detailed, finely crafted, and has a pounding heart the size of a boxcar. If you don’t mind the obscenity and violence (and there is a bunch), I’d definitely say this is a movie worth seeing.

~ EM was in a couple of groups before he decided to go solo in 1997. Some of the groups included: Bassmint Productions, the New Jacks, and Soul Intent. 1 of these groups would perform wearing ski masks and sweat suits. When they finished their set, they would “unmask” themselves.

~EM fell in love with rap when he 1st heard Ice-T’s “Reckless” & started writing rhymes when he was 12 years old.

~ EM would spend hours at night studying the dictionary so that he could expand his vocabulary for his raps.

~ EM still gets nervous before going on stage.

~EM worked for a factory called Gibbs Machinery when he was 16. He had a lot of odd jobs (sweeping floors, taking out the trash) and also worked at Little Ceaser’s pizza.

~ EM was a short-order cook at a restaurant called Gilbert’s Lodge in St. Claire Shores, Michigan. Whenever he had some lyrics he needed to write down, he’d write them on some receipts. He also used to write his lyrics in pencil on the wall above his bed, but his mom got really pissed cuz the paint came off after trying to erase them. When his friends came to eat, he would also rap things off the menu to them.

~ EM was really quiet at school and had a hard time making friends, but started becoming more social in the 8th grade. He used to spend his free time watching TV and reading comic books.

~ Before EM heard rap, he wanted to be a comic book artist.

~ EM’s idea of splurging is spending $500 or $600 at Nike Town. He’s not used to having so much money and doesn’t really know what to do with it.

~ EM and Dre got the idea for “Guilty Conscience” ‘s second verse from the movie “Animal House.”

~ Kim has a twin sister named Dawn.

~ EM gave Paul Rosenberg one of the Grammys that he won in 2000.

~ Paul “Bunyan” Rosenberg has been EM’s mananger since 1995.

~ EM feels that he can’t trust anybody that he meets because the thinks that they are just trying to befriend him because he’s famous. He likes to keep in touch with his circle of friends who know him as Marshall Mathers.

~ The background for “Kim” was on a 1983 episode of “Growing Pains.”

~ The 4 recorded dates for EM getting beat up by D’Angelo Bailey were: October 15, 1981-Marshall got beat up, was bruised, got the wind knocked out of him, had nausea, abnormal sleepiness, and had injuries toward his lips and tongue. November 14, 1981-Marshall suffered another beating during recess, but had sleeplessness, vomiting, nightmares, and antisocial behavior. December 21, 1981-Marshall suffered yet another beating with injuries toward his face, head, back, and legs. January 13, 1982-Marshall was intentionally hit with a snowball containing a heavy object, was mainly wounded severely while lying on the ground and eventually went into a coma and an intermittent loss of vision in his right eye and an intermittent loss of hearing. (This info was based on official legal documents because the Mathers family tried to sue the school board, but lost).

~ EM says that D’Angelo was the biggest kid in school and he was the smallest. EM claims he still sees a white dot in his right eye from time to time.

~D-12 originally wanted to be called the Dirty Dozen, but the name was already taken by a jazz group. They ended up choosing D-12 which is short for Dirty Dozen or the Detroit 12. The reason why the group wanted to be named the Dirty Dozen was because they all wanted to do a Western song and be outlaws in it.

~All members had to have alter egos, but EM had the most trouble picking a name. He says that the name (Slim Shady) finally came to him one day while he was taking a shit and that once he thought of it he started thinking of 100 other words that rhymed with it.

~While D-12 was touring in Australia (2001), they spent some of their free time fishing and bowling.

~The rest of D-12 say that EM can’t dribble a basketball without traveling, but still don’t see him as white and even call him “nigga”.

~Devil’s Night would have been released sooner, but EM lost his Britney notebook that contained a grip of lyrics on a Delta Air Lines Flight from Cincinnati to New Orleans. Even though a big ass reward was offered (either $$ or a chance to meet EM in person), it never turned up.

~Devil’s Night was named after the Detroit holiday (which takes place the night before Halloween) where everybody basically trashes everything in sight. The tradition began in the mid 80’s and last year, Devil’s Night was the cause of 151 fires that were set in the city.

~All of the members have kids except for Kuniva.

~Before D-12 was formed, EM was a battle rhymer, Proof was a freestyler and hosted open-mike battles every Saturday, Bizarre was a solo artist, Kuniva and Kon Artis were part of Da Brigade, and Swift was part of the Rabeez. DJ Head, EM’s former CO-producer and DJ, was also the turntablist at the Hip Hop Shop.

~Proof came up with the idea to form the group because he wanted to bring all of Detroit’s illest MCs together.

~D-12 used to perform at Maurice Malone’s Hip Hop Shop on 7 Mile Road, St. Andrew’s Hall, and Alvin’s.

~When the group didn’t get any record deals after years of touring, they all decided to go solo and the 1st one to become famous would come back for the rest of D-12. Everyone in the group thought that Proof would be the first member discovered. When Dre discovered EM out of nowhere and signed him to Aftermath, everyone was surprised.

~Even though EM was the member to get D-12 signed, he’s not the leader because the group says that it doesn’t have one.

~Kon Artis used to steal cars and wanted to be in the NBA, but after getting shot in the leg, he decided to stick to rapping.

~Kuniva battled EM to boost his early career.

~Swift took the place of the late member Bugz. He passed away May 21, 1999 because of a water gun incident at a picnic that turned into a fistfight. One of his last requests was to have Swift in the group. .

~Bizarre had a solo effort called Attack of the Weirdos EP in 1998.

~EM and Proof met during their high school years. EM was at Lincoln High passing out flyers to a talent show he was doing. He gave 1 to Proof and they ended up rapping together. Proof and him both ended up rhyming “first place” with “birthday”. Proof then introduced EM to Kon Artis and the rest is history…
